What is a scenic road and when is a permit required?

All roads in the Town of Boxford except Route 133, Route 97 and I-95 have been designated Scenic Roads. The Scenic Roads Act (Mass. General Law, Chapter 40, Section 15C and Chapter 87, Sections 3 & 4) prohibits the disturbance of any existing stone wall, or the removal of trees, located in a Scenic Road right-of-way without approval from the Boxford Planning Board. The road right-of-way is typically 50-feet wide, and typically extends 10 feet from the edge of pavement on both sides.

If your work requires a Scenic Road Act permit, please contact the Planning Board well before construction begins. The Planning Board will arrange for public notice to be published in a local newspaper, and schedule a public hearing with the Planning Board. Seven days before the hearing, the Boxford Tree Warden will post the trees with a legal notice on each tree proposed for removal
