Motor Vehicle Excise Tax Bills Due on Monday, March 23rd

Excise tax bills were mailed on Feb. 19th to all owners of vehicles that were registered and garaged in Boxford on January 1st.  The payment due date is March 23rd.

Adjustments (abatements) to bills for vehicles no longer owned and registered may be obtained from the Office of the Assessor which requires the submission of an abatement application and supporting documentation.

The value of the vehicle that appears on the bill is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) in the year of manufacture, reduced according to the following depreciation schedule of the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV):

50% Year Prior to Manufacture (i.e. 2020 vehicle registered in 2019)
90% Year of Manufacture
60% 2nd Year
40% 3rd Year
25% 4th Year
10% 5th Year and every year thereafter for the life of the vehicle

Please note that the RMV changed its method of valuation this year by rounding to the nearest $1.00. Previously, the valuation amount was rounded to the nearest $50.00 based upon MSRP.  Although this method will provide for greater accuracy, taxpayers who own vehicles that are older than 5 years will notice a very small difference in this year’s tax amount as compared to that billed in previous years.
